Cherry and Jerry of St. Louis will discuss and play music by women composers of ragtime music. R
Women ragtime composers faced challenges – it wasn’t considered very “ladylike” to write this kind of music, and once they got married, they were expected to give up their composing career and raise a family. May Aufderheide’s family was appalled when she presented them with a ragtime score, and Charlotte Blake’s publishers were afraid to put her first name on her music. Eventually these women became some of the most popular composers of their day. Another composer, Irene Giblin, got her start demonstrating sheet music in a St. Louis department store. Along with that we’ll meet some famous singers; vaudeville performer Sophie Tucker had an unusual rag written especially for her.
